Youngstown State rallies to stun Ohio State men's basketball, 72-71
Youngstown State (11-1) used a 14-0 run spanning the end of the first half and the start of the second to turn a 14-point deficit into a 42-37 lead.
The Penguins held on in the final minutes to secure the victory, their first over a Power Five opponent since 2012.
Trailing 37-28 with 2:24 remaining in the first half, Youngstown State closed the half on a 14-0 run to take a 42-37 lead into the break.
The Penguins extended their lead to 50-39 early in the second half, but the Buckeyes (8-3) battled back to tie the game at 59-59 with 5:40 remaining.
Youngstown State regained the lead on a layup by Naz Bohannon with 4:14 left, and the Penguins held on for the victory despite a three-pointer by Ohio State's Bruce Thornton with 1.1 seconds remaining.
Bohannon led Youngstown State with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Dwayne Cohill added 17 points and 5 rebounds.
Thornton led Ohio State with 19 points, while Brice Sensabaugh added 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Buckeyes shot just 38.9% from the field, including 28.6% from three-point range.
Youngstown State shot 46.9% from the field, including 36.4% from three-point range.
The Penguins also outrebounded the Buckeyes 39-32.
The victory is a major upset for Youngstown State, which is now 11-1 on the season.
It is also the Penguins' first victory over a Power Five opponent since they defeated West Virginia in 2012.
The Buckeyes, meanwhile, fall to 8-3 on the season.
They will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host Alabama A&M.
