Phil Parkinson reflects on ‘early’ League One promotion race
Bristol Rovers boss believes this season’s promotion push is starting earlier
Phil Parkinson believes the race for promotion in League One is starting earlier than ever as Bristol Rovers began their campaign with a 1-0 win at Burton Albion.

The Gas won thanks to a late goal from Josh Coburn in the driving rain at the Pirelli Stadium, but more importantly they earned a clean sheet on the opening day of the season.
And Parkinson, who has only been in charge of Rovers since the end of May, is under no illusions about how tough life in this division is going to be.
Quotes
“We knew it would be a tough, physical game against a team who have been in the Championship not so long ago,” said Parkinson.
“They caused us problems, particularly in the second half. But we defended well and I am delighted with the clean sheet.
“We didn’t play as well as we can. There were lots of unforced errors and we have to be tidier and cleaner.
“But it is early in the season. It is nice to get the win and to come away with three points.”
It was Rovers’ first opening day win since 2017, and Parkinson’s first win as Rovers boss, but he knows there is a long way to go.
“This division is relentless, you have to be ready for every game,” he added.
“There are some real good teams in this division and I think it is going to be even tougher this season.
“It is early to be talking about promotion, but you need to be winning games at the start of the season to give you a platform.
“I am pleased with the win today, but we need to improve.”
