UVA basketball’s new offense is designed to get the ball inside to its big men. And against Campbell on Monday night, that’s exactly what the Cavaliers did. UVA scored 32 points in the paint on 15-of-28 shooting. Kadin Shedrick led the way with 10 points, while Jayden Gardner added 9 points.

New offense working

The Cavaliers’ new offense is a far cry from the one they ran last season. Under former coach Tony Bennett, UVA was known for its slow-paced, methodical style of play. But new coach Todd DeSorbo is looking to push the tempo and get his players more involved in the paint.

The results were evident against Campbell. The Cavaliers were able to get the ball inside to their big men with ease. And once they got it there, they were able to finish.

Shedrick and Gardner lead the way

Kadin Shedrick and Jayden Gardner were the main beneficiaries of the Cavaliers’ new offense. Shedrick scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while Gardner added 9 points on 3-of-5 shooting. Both players were able to get good position in the post and finish over smaller defenders.

The Cavaliers’ new offense is still a work in progress, but it showed a lot of promise against Campbell. If UVA can continue to get the ball inside to its big men, it will be a tough team to beat this season.
