Ronaldo's late goal rescues Portugal against Poland in Nations League opener
Portugal started their UEFA Nations League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Poland in Chorzow on Thursday.
The visitors dominated possession and created the better chances throughout the match, but they were unable to find a breakthrough until the 89th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stunning goal to secure all three points.
The win moves Portugal to the top of Group A3, while Poland are bottom after their opening defeat.
Portugal made a bright start to the match and should have taken the lead in the 12th minute when Ronaldo was played through on goal, but he fired wide of the target.
Poland grew into the game as the half wore on and had a good chance to take the lead in the 35th minute when Robert Lewandowski was played through on goal, but he too fired wide.
The second half was a more even affair, with both teams having chances to win the game.
Ronaldo had a great chance to score in the 65th minute when he was played through on goal again, but he was denied by a brilliant save from Wojciech Szczesny.
Poland had a great chance to win the game in the 85th minute when Piotr Zielinski was played through on goal, but he too was denied by a brilliant save from Rui Patricio.
Just when it looked like the match was going to end in a draw, Ronaldo popped up with a moment of magic to score the winning goal.
The Portugal captain received the ball on the left-hand side of the box and cut inside before firing a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.
