Rio Ferdinand gives clear Cristiano Ronaldo verdict after spectacular CR7 overhead kick
Ferdinand insists the superstar forward still has plenty to offer any side
Cristiano Ronaldo proved he is still a world-class performer with his spectacular overhead kick for Manchester United against Villarreal in the Champions League, but Rio Ferdinand believes the forward's future lies away from Old Trafford.
The 36-year-old forward has been linked with a move away from United in recent weeks, with Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich all reportedly interested in signing him.
Ferdinand, who played alongside Ronaldo at United, believes the forward is still capable of playing at the highest level, but he doubts whether he will be able to do so at United.
"I think he's still got a lot to offer any team," Ferdinand told BT Sport. "But I don't think he's going to get it at Manchester United. I don't think they're going to challenge for the title this year, I don't think they're going to win a trophy this year. I think he wants to win trophies and I don't think he's going to do it at Manchester United."
Ronaldo has scored five goals in six appearances for United since returning to the club from Juventus in the summer.
However, United have struggled for form in recent weeks, winning just one of their last five games in all competitions.
Ferdinand believes Ronaldo's frustration at United's poor form was evident in his reaction to being substituted in the 2-1 defeat to Young Boys in the Champions League last month.
"I think he's frustrated," Ferdinand added. "He wants to win trophies, he wants to play in the Champions League. He wants to be playing at the highest level and I don't think Manchester United are at that level at the moment."
Ronaldo's contract at United expires in the summer of 2023. It remains to be seen whether he will stay at the club beyond this season.
