Penrith Panthers star Nathan Cleary escapes suspension for dangerous tackle

Cleary's tackle on Parramatta Eels player Reed Mahoney placed on report

Penrith Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary has escaped suspension for a dangerous tackle on Parramatta Eels player Reed Mahoney in their NRL match on Friday night.

Cleary was placed on report for the tackle in the 27th minute of the match, which the Panthers went on to win 22-20.

The Match Review Committee (MRC) assessed the tackle and deemed it to be careless, but not worthy of a suspension. Cleary will, however, receive 93.75 carry-over points, meaning he will miss one match if he is found guilty of any other contrary conduct charge in the next 12 months.

Cleary's tackle sparked controversy

Cleary's tackle sparked controversy, with some commentators believing it should have resulted in a suspension. However, the MRC ruled that the tackle was not intentional and that Cleary had made an attempt to wrap his arms around Mahoney.

The MRC also took into account Cleary's previous good record and the fact that he had not been suspended in the past 12 months.

Cleary relieved to avoid suspension

Cleary said he was relieved to avoid suspension and that he was grateful for the opportunity to play in the Panthers' next match against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.

"I'm just glad I can play next week," Cleary said. "I thought I might have been suspended, but I'm grateful to the MRC for giving me a chance to play."

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary pleased with MRC decision

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary said he was pleased with the MRC's decision and that he believed Cleary had not intended to injure Mahoney.

"I thought it was a fair decision," Cleary said. "I think Nathan made an attempt to wrap his arms around Mahoney and I don't think he intended to injure him."

Cleary set to play against Sharks

Cleary is now set to play against the Sharks in the Panthers' next match on Saturday night. The Panthers will be looking to continue their winning ways and move closer to securing a top-four finish.
