Ouahabi: We’re getting better every year
Noor Ouahabi is one of the most successful skateboarders in the world. In 2021, she became the first woman to land a 540 kickflip. She has also won numerous gold medals at the X Games and is a two-time World Champion.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Ouahabi spoke about her career and the progress of women’s skateboarding. She said that she is proud of how far women’s skateboarding has come, but that there is still a lot of work to be done.
“We’re getting better every year,” Ouahabi said. “But we’re still not where we need to be. There are still not enough women skating, and there’s still not enough representation for women in skateboarding.”
Ouahabi said that she hopes to see more women getting involved in skateboarding. She believes that skateboarding can be a great way for women to empower themselves and to express themselves.
“Skateboarding is a great way to learn how to be strong and independent,” Ouahabi said. “It’s a great way to express yourself and to be creative.”
Ouahabi is one of the most visible women in skateboarding, and she is using her platform to advocate for more women in the sport. She is a role model for young girls who want to get involved in skateboarding, and she is helping to pave the way for a more inclusive skateboarding community.
Here are some of the challenges facing women in skateboarding:
- Lack of visibility: Women skateboarders are often underrepresented in the media and in skateboarding competitions.
- Lack of role models: There are few female skateboarders who are well-known to the general public, which can make it difficult for young girls to find inspiration.
- Discrimination: Women skateboarders can face discrimination from both male and female skateboarders, who may not believe that they are as capable as men.
- Lack of access to resources: Women skateboarders may not have access to the same resources as male skateboarders, such as skateparks and coaching.
Despite these challenges, women’s skateboarding is growing rapidly.
In 2020, the International Skateboarding Federation (ISF) announced that it would be adding women’s skateboarding to the 2024 Summer Olympics. This is a major step forward for women’s skateboarding, and it is likely to lead to even more growth in the sport.
Ouahabi is optimistic about the future of women’s skateboarding. She believes that the sport is on the cusp of a major breakout, and she is excited to see what the future holds.
“I think we’re going to see a lot more women getting involved in skateboarding in the next few years,” Ouahabi said. “And I think we’re going to see more and more women winning competitions and making a name for themselves.”
