Nets' Jordi Fernandez says Nic Claxton's back issue has been lingering
Claxton, who missed the final three games of the regular season, sat out of Game 1 of the first round against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday due to a non-COVID illness.
“Nic is dealing with a back issue,” Fernandez told reporters before Tuesday’s practice. “It’s been lingering for a little bit, and we’re just trying to manage it right now. He’s not 100 percent, but he’s getting better.”
Fernandez said the Nets are hopeful that Claxton will be able to play in Game 2 on Wednesday night.
“We’re going to see how he responds to treatment today,” Fernandez said. “If he’s feeling better, then he’ll be out there. If not, then we’ll go with the same lineup that we had in Game 1.”
Claxton, 23, averaged 8.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game this season. He is a key part of the Nets’ defense, and his absence would be a major blow.
The Nets are already without Kyrie Irving, who is not eligible to play in home games due to his vaccination status. Kevin Durant is also dealing with a knee injury, though he is expected to play in Game 2.
The Nets will need Claxton to be at his best if they want to win a championship this season. He is a young, talented player who has the potential to be one of the best defenders in the NBA.
