Nathan Cleary and Five Other NRL Stars ‘Keen’ on Making Shock Career Switch
Rugby League Players Considering Switch to Rival Code
Six of the NRL's biggest stars, including Nathan Cleary, are reportedly considering a shock career switch to rugby union.
According to The Daily Telegraph, Cleary, as well as Latrell Mitchell, Josh Addo-Carr, Cameron Munster, Harry Grant, and Ryan Papenhuyzen, have all been approached by rugby union clubs in recent months.
What's Driving the Interest?
There are a number of factors that are said to be driving the interest in rugby union among NRL players.
Firstly, the financial rewards on offer in rugby union are significantly higher than in the NRL.
Secondly, rugby union is seen as a more global game, with opportunities to play in Europe and Japan.
Thirdly, some players are said to be frustrated by the physicality of the NRL and are looking for a less demanding code.
Cleary Non-Committal
Cleary has been the subject of intense speculation about his future, with some reports suggesting he could be on the verge of signing a deal with the NSW Waratahs.
However, the Penrith Panthers star has remained non-committal about his plans, saying he is focused on the upcoming NRL season.
Other Players Linked with Move
Mitchell, Addo-Carr, Munster, Grant, and Papenhuyzen have all been linked with moves to rugby union in recent months.
Mitchell is said to be unhappy with his current contract at the Sydney Roosters, while Addo-Carr is reportedly keen to play in England.
Munster and Grant are both off-contract at the end of 2024, while Papenhuyzen is contracted until the end of 2026.
Impact on the NRL
If six of the NRL's biggest stars were to switch to rugby union, it would have a significant impact on the competition.
The NRL would lose some of its most marketable players, and it could lead to a decline in interest in the game.
However, it is also possible that the loss of some of its biggest stars could create opportunities for other players to shine.
