FDA Issues Highest Risk Onion Recall Level
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued its highest level of recall alert for onions linked to a recent Salmonella outbreak. The recall includes all red, yellow, and white onions supplied by Thomson International Inc. of Bakersfield, California.
The recall level, known as a Class I recall, indicates that the FDA believes the product is likely to cause serious health consequences or death.
Outbreak Linked to Onion Recall
The recall comes after an investigation linked the onions to an outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections. As of April 20, 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 650 confirmed cases in 37 states. Of those cases, 129 people have been hospitalized and two have died.
The CDC advises consumers to avoid eating any onions supplied by Thomson International Inc. and to discard any recalled onions they may have.
Symptoms of Salmonella Infection
Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include:
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal cramps
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Fatigue
In severe cases, Salmonella infection can lead to sepsis, meningitis, and even death.
How to Protect Yourself
To protect yourself from Salmonella infection, the CDC recommends:
- Avoiding recalled onions
- Washing fresh produce thoroughly before eating
- Cooking meat and poultry to a safe internal temperature
- Washing your hands often with soap and water

The FDA is continuing to investigate the outbreak and has not yet determined the source of the contamination. The agency is working with Thomson International Inc. to identify the source of the problem and prevent future outbreaks.
