Kyogo Furuhashi: Celtic Forward Suffers Shoulder Injury in Japan Training
Japanese international forced off in friendly; World Cup in jeopardy
Furuhashi expected to miss several weeks
Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi has suffered a shoulder injury in training with the Japan national team, casting doubt over his participation in the upcoming World Cup.
The 27-year-old was forced off in the first half of a friendly against South Korea on Friday, after landing awkwardly on his shoulder following a challenge from defender Kim Min-jae.
Furuhashi underwent a scan on Saturday, which revealed the extent of the injury. Celtic have confirmed that the forward is expected to miss several weeks of action.
Injury blow for Celtic and Japan
The injury is a major blow for both Celtic and Japan. Furuhashi has been in excellent form for the Scottish champions this season, scoring 17 goals in 29 appearances.
He was also expected to play a key role for Japan at the World Cup, which begins in Qatar on November 20. Furuhashi has been capped 16 times by his country and has scored three goals.
Surgery not ruled out
The severity of Furuhashi's injury is not yet known, but Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou admitted that surgery is not being ruled out.
"It's a big blow for us," Postecoglou said. "He's a fantastic player and he's been in great form for us this season.
"We're going to get him assessed and see what the extent of the damage is. But it's not looking good at the moment."
World Cup hopes in doubt
Furuhashi's injury is also a major concern for Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu. The forward is a key part of Moriyasu's plans for the World Cup, and his absence would be a major setback.
Japan have been drawn in Group E at the World Cup, alongside Spain, Germany and Costa Rica. They will open their campaign against Germany on November 23.
Road to recovery
Furuhashi will now begin his road to recovery. The Celtic medical staff will work closely with him to ensure he returns to full fitness as quickly as possible.
Celtic fans will be hoping that Furuhashi can make a speedy recovery and return to action soon. He is a vital player for the Scottish champions, and they will need him at his best if they are to challenge for the title this season.
