Geno Auriemma Signs First Irish Player in UConn Women's Basketball History
Auriemma Adds New Recruit to Roster
Geno Auriemma, head coach of the University of Connecticut women's basketball team, has signed his first Irish player in program history. On Tuesday, Auriemma announced the addition of Aaliyah Edwards, a 6-foot-3 forward from Ballincollig, County Cork, Ireland.
Edwards is a highly touted recruit, ranked 25th in the ESPN HoopGurlz rankings for the 2024 class.
She is considered one of the top prospects in Europe and has represented Ireland at the youth level. Edwards is known for her versatility, ability to shoot the ball, and strong defense.
Auriemma is excited about the addition of Edwards to the Huskies' roster.
"Aaliyah is a special player and we are thrilled to have her join our program," said Auriemma. "She is a versatile forward who can score inside and out and is an excellent defender. We think she has the potential to be a great player for us."
Edwards is expected to join the Huskies for the 2024-25 season.
She will be the first Irish player to play for the UConn women's basketball team. The Huskies have a long and storied history, having won 11 national championships and produced numerous All-Americans and Olympians.
Edwards' signing is a major coup for Auriemma and the Huskies.
It shows that the Huskies are still the top destination for the best women's basketball players in the world.
