Exeter City overcome Lincoln City in a thrilling game
Exeter City have emerged victorious in a closely fought contest against Lincoln City in their latest EFL League One match.
The Grecians started the game brightly, with Matt Jay testing Lincoln's goalkeeper Josh Griffiths early on. However, it was the visitors who took the lead against the run of play when Ben House headed home from a corner in the 20th minute.
Exeter responded well to going behind and equalised just five minutes later through an excellent strike from Josh Key. The hosts continued to push for a winner and were rewarded when Jevani Brown converted a penalty in the 65th minute after he was fouled in the area.
Lincoln pressed for an equaliser but Exeter held on for a deserved victory. The result moves the Grecians up to 12th in the table, while Lincoln remain in the relegation zone.
Gary Caldwell, Exeter City manager
"I'm delighted with the performance and the result," said Caldwell. "We showed great character to come back from behind and win the game. We created a lot of chances and could have scored more goals, but I'm pleased with the three points.
"We're now unbeaten in four games and we're starting to find some consistency. We're still not where we want to be, but we're moving in the right direction."
Michael Appleton, Lincoln City manager
"I'm disappointed with the result, but I can't fault the effort of my players," said Appleton. "We gave Exeter a good game and I thought we deserved something from the match.
"We're in a difficult position at the moment, but we're not giving up. We'll keep fighting and we'll try to turn things around."
Conclusion
Exeter City's victory over Lincoln City was a vital one in their bid to climb the League One table. The Grecians showed great character to come from behind and win the game, and they will be looking to build on this result in their upcoming matches.
