Coleen Rooney V Rebekah Vardy: The Story Behind The Case

The Wagatha Christie

Coleen Rooney, the wife of former England footballer Wayne Rooney, is set to face Rebekah Vardy, the wife of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, in a libel trial over a social media post in which Rooney accused Vardy of leaking stories about her to the press. The case has been dubbed the "Wagatha Christie" trial.

The Allegations

In October 2019, Rooney posted a statement on Instagram and Twitter claiming that she had carried out a "sting operation" to find out who was leaking stories about her to the press. She said she had blocked all of her followers except Vardy from viewing her Instagram Stories, and that after a series of posts, the stories had continued to appear in the press. - [The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/10027276/coleen-rooney-rebekah-vardy-wagatha-christie/) - [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/oct/09/rebekah-vardy-responds-to-coleen-rooney-accusation) - [BBC News](https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-49980019) Vardy denied the allegations and said she was "disgusted" by the accusations. She said she had never leaked stories about Rooney to the press, and that she had no knowledge of anyone else doing so.

The Libel Case

In June 2020, Vardy launched a libel action against Rooney. She claimed that Rooney's post had caused her "serious harm and distress", and that it had damaged her reputation. Rooney defended the action, saying that her post was "true and in the public interest". - [BBC News](https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-53081786) - [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jun/23/rebekah-vardy-sues-coleen-rooney-for-libel-over-wagatha-christie-post) - [The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/06/23/rebekah-vardy-sues-coleen-rooney-libel-wagatha-christie-row/) The trial is due to start on 10th May 2022. It is expected to last for seven days.
